SUMMARY:Creek Week Cleanup 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Fountain Creek Watershed needs helping hands!\nIt’s common for trash and debris to end up in waterways – clogging drainage systems\, impacting wildlife\, affecting water quality\, and ruining the view of our natural landscapes. \nBe part of the largest watershed-wide clean-up in the state of Colorado! Creek Week volunteers clean up litter along a creek\, trail\, park\, or open space throughout the watershed. We’re inviting individuals and groups (families\, clubs\, schools\, neighborhoods\, etc.) to form a Creek Crew. Get outdoors\, get active\, and get busy creating positive change for your community and those living downstream. \nHow to get involved\nCreek Week cleanups happen across the watershed—from Palmer Lake to Pueblo—over nine action-packed days of service and stewardship! \nWhether you’re ready to lead a cleanup or simply want to lend a hand\, there’s a role for everyone.

SUMMARY:Cool Science / CRES - Interactive Microgrid\, Fuel Cell/Battery\, Solar Oven\, etc.
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Renewable Energy Society – Southestern Chapter returns to the Cool Science Carnival Day with a booth and activities! This is one of many booths with activities primarily for grades K-8\, but microgrids and fuel cells may interest adults as well! \nThe event and parking are free. No need to register. \nBooth Location:\nOur booth will be located in front of the UCCS Library\, near the Mountain Lion Statue. \nActivities & Demonstrations at the SECRES Booth:\nWe are planning several interactive STEM exhibits that showcase sustainable energy technologies and their real-world applications: \n1. Microgrid Prototype\nA small-scale working model of a microgrid\, to demonstrate how multiple energy sources (solar\, battery storage\, and hydrogen fuel cells) can work together to power a mini “community.” \nEducational Focus: \n\nHow distributed energy systems work\nImportance of grid resilience and energy independence\nReal-world applications in remote or disaster-prone areas\n\n2. Fuel Cell & Battery Integration Demo\nThis setup will show how hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity and how energy can be stored in batteries for later use. \nEducational Focus: \n\nZero-emission energy generation\nThe role of hydrogen in future energy systems\nStorage and load-balancing challenges in renewable energy\n\n3. Solar-Powered Car Demonstration\nA functioning mini solar car will be available for kids and adults to see in action. Attendees can learn about how solar panels generate electricity to power small motors. \nEducational Focus: \n\nBasics of photovoltaic technology\nSolar energy as a clean transportation fuel\nHands-on fun for kids\, with simple science explanations\n\n4. Solar Oven Display\nWe will have a solar oven set up to show how sunlight can be harnessed for cooking. Depending on the weather\, we may even do a live demo with simple items (like melting chocolate or warming snacks). \nEducational Focus: \n\nSolar heating\nEnergy conservation in daily life\n\nThese activities are designed to be engaging for all ages while sparking curiosity about clean energy and sustainability. \nDraws to the Booth: \n\nInteractive\, hands-on STEM activities\nReal-world applications of green energy technology\nFriendly student and faculty volunteers\nEducational giveaways\n\nWe’re still looking for volunteers to help staff the CRES booth throughout the event. SECRES is also in need of additional volunteers to help with our fall programming. Email Derek Law (d.law@cres-energy.org) if you are interested.
